Sizing a standby generator: kVA, kW and motor starts

Why a 100 kVA set does not run 100 kW of load, and how to add the right margin.

  • Generators are rated in kVA (apparent power). At a typical power factor of 0.8, usable real power is kVA × 0.8.
  • Motors draw 3–6× their running current at start. Size for the largest motor starting while others run, or use soft starters.
  • Add 20–25% headroom for growth and to keep the engine in its efficient load band.
  • Altitude and high ambient temperature (common in the Gulf) derate output; confirm with the manufacturer curve.
